UNEARTH

INcinerate!

Unbelievably, Unearth, have make their first appearance to Vancouver in just under 10 years.

The last time I got to see one of the pioneers in metalcore was actually longer back in 2009 with a hugely stacked lineup of Cannibal Corpse, Hatebreed, Hate Eternal and Born of Osiris.   What a show that was.   But the biggest thing I remember about this band was the energy they put out.    Yes, they had a incredible album with them too with The March (2009) and prior to that, my personal favorite that got alot of spins with III: In the Eyes of Fire (2006).   They have 8 albums released since 2001, with the latest being The Wretched; The Ruinous in 2023.

They have 2 founding members that are the core of the band with Trevor Phipps (vocals) and Buz McGrath (lead guitar).   Longtime Rhythm guitarist parted ways with Unearth  in 2023 and since has been replaced by Peter Layman.  The rest of the band is Mike Justian (drums) and Chris O’Toole (bass).

Currently on tour supporting In Flames, the 8 song set tonight in Vancouver (April 1 2025) was heavily weighted on their perhaps most critically lauded album The Oncoming Storm (2004) with 4 songs.    One thing that really surprised me is after some 24 years, these guys STILL have the energy and bounce around on stage like none other.  The guitar tone produced was pulverizing as they use the EVH Stealth amp heads and I can definitely hear the difference juxtaposed to bands that have gone the digital route.

They also seem to be touring more too as of late, as I see they are coming back to Canada with Machine Head in May (Kelowna BC May 10 2025).   That will be a whopper of a show too, highly recommend!
