DARK TRANQUILITY

Not nothing!

Dark Tranquility return to Vancouver with a fierce, modern set proving their Melodic Death Metal legacy still hits hard

Fresh off an all‑American bill last weekend with Lamb of God, tonight delivers a full European pivot. The Rickshaw Theatre in Vancouver hosts Sweden’s Dark Tranquillity co‑headlining with fellow countrymen Soen, with Andorran prog‑death unit Persefone opening the night. I hadn’t caught Dark Tranquillity since 2018’s Atoma tour, so it felt like the perfect time to check back in and see where their live show has evolved to.

Mikael Stanne – Rickshaw Theatre – Vancouver 2026

Dark Tranquillity has become a band in constant evolution. Mikael Stanne remains the lone founding member on vocals, joined by longtime keyboardist Martin Brändström (holding the post since ’98). The rest of the lineup reflects the group’s modern era: Johan Reinholdz on lead guitar (2020), Christian Jansson on bass (2023), Joakim Strandberg Nilsson on drums (2023), and newest addition Peter Lyse Karmark on rhythm guitar (2024) who recently took over from Christopher Amott (ex Arch Enemy).

With 13 albums behind them — the latest being Endtime Signals (2024) — it hasn’t been long since Vancouver last saw them. They hit the same stage in September 2024 and pulled five tracks from that new record. I’m expecting a mixed set tonight: the usual anchor tracks from Endtime Signals, plus maybe a couple of fresh additions we didn’t hear on the previous run. That’s typically how they roll — give you the hits, then dig a little deeper the next time around.

Tonight’s set opens in a pretty intriguing way: Dark Tranquillity dive straight into a triple‑shot from their revered Character album (2005). They kick things off with “The New Build” (note: Punch My Heaven isn’t on Character), followed by “The Endless Feed” and then Lost to Apathy. All three tracks are prime examples of that classic Swedish melodic‑death DNA the band helped pioneer.

As for Mikael Stanne’s vocals—does he still match that 2005 ferocity? Mostly. The raw edge has softened a touch with time, but he’s still remarkably close, and the delivery carries the same conviction.

Christian Jansson on bass

What really stands out is how youthful the band feels onstage. Stanne has surrounded himself with players who bring constant motion and energy—everyone roaming, swapping positions, keeping the stage alive. It’s infectious, and Stanne clearly feeds off it. Hard to believe he’s 51 when he’s working the room with that much stamina.

A major highlight for me was “Nothing to No One” from Fiction (2007)—one of my all‑time favorites from their catalog, and it absolutely landed tonight.

Peter Lyse Karmark on rhythm guitar

From the new Endtime Signals album, they hit three tracks: “Not Nothing” (which made for a funny moment considering it followed “Nothing to No One”—are we nothing or not nothing?), along with “The Last Imagination” and “Unforgivable.”

Song ten of the night, “Atoma,” had a slightly shaky start—Stanne’s clean intro sounded a bit off‑key—but once the full band kicked in, everything locked together. The rest of the lineup was tight throughout, with all three guitarists headbanging through the entire set, keeping the energy high and the crowd fully engaged.

Joakim Strandberg Nilsson on drums

They wrapped their 14‑song set with “Phantom Days”, followed by one of the standout cuts from Fiction, “Misery’s Crown.” For longtime Dark Tranquillity fans hoping for anything pre‑2005, tonight wasn’t your night—nothing earlier made the cut. Even so, the show was an absolute rager, a reminder that this band can still swing just as hard as any melodic‑death act sharing the stage with them.
